Corporate Politics And Responsibilities Corporate Responsibility As we moved into the 1990s companies became aware that social responsibility was essential to their corporate responsibility to make a profit. Companies are now discovering that high road practices such as working with unions, and treating the community and environment are often more profitable, and certainly more respectful than old style low road practices that companies used to use that often overlook the needs of the unions, community and environment. William Norris, the founder of Control Data Corporation sums it up well when he stated that, You cant do business in a society thats burning. What he meant was that if your community houses the poor and uneducated, you cant run a business. If your employee pool is uneducated, than your product will be poor, and if your community is poor, than no body will be able to afford your product. One step in being a responsible corporate entity is to better your relationship with your employees. One notable example of this is GMs Saturn division. Saturn is known for making managers partners rather than bosses, and during meetings, everybody has say. Other companies look to distribute stock to its workers, therefore making the workers the owners. This is usually done through the companies 401k plan. Another step to being a responsible corporate entity is to give back to their community. Organizations such as Levi Strauss, Honeywell, and Reebok encourage their employees to serve community service by working in soup kitchens, tutor in local schools, and give their time to other charitable organizations. While it may give these corporations a good image because they are acting socially responsible, there is also hard evidence that it also makes them more profitable. For example, the Council on Economic Prioritys (CEP), a prestigious resource council has found that the more socially responsible a company is, the more likely that a company is going to be financially successful. A Dickinson College study done in 1992 found the same results, and a 1993 Rutgers study found that the top 25 percent of firms rated by their social responsibility had an 11% higher gross rate of return on capital than their competitors. Corporations using self-managing or empowering their workers show fewer turnovers, less absenteeism, and a higher rate of productivity. This leads to a duel bottom line of achieving both higher financial gains, and valuing workers. Flaws in Corporate Responsibility Corporations still make huge profits from sweatshops and child labor that no socially responsible corporation could attain. Many of these corporations listed above still use the resources of El Salvador and China for their ultra cheap labor. For a company to be truly socially responsible, it must act in a responsible manner when profits are to be had, and it also must act in a responsible manner when it may indeed be more profitable to take the low road. Part of the flaw in corporate responsibility is that nobody defines the meaning of responsibility, and nobody has the power to decide the values of a responsible corporation. In todays corporate responsibility scene, there are many contradictions. Corporate Democracy Corporations have much power. With their money they are able to control the media, make political donations, and manipulate consumers. Many people believe that this is better than the other systems of government, most notably communism and socialism. One of the problems is that no institution willing gives up power. The irony of our system is that as corporate power grows, the more corporations rely on democracy. Some people believe that a form of democracy for business and society would benefit both businesses and social well being. There are five key ways that a form of democracy would effect a corporation. The first key is to create a national seminar on the role and morality of markets. The second key is to empower all stakeholders, not just the shareholders. The third key is to recharter the corporation into the public entity that it is. The fourth key is to develop new forms of ownership and networks of cooperative community based business. The United States have been discussing conducting air strikes against Iraq. The 1991 Gulf War may not have been as successful as believed. The United States spent millions of American dollars to support the war effort in the 1991 Gulf War. Taxpayers money is not the only expendable thing during the 1991 Gulf War. Many United States Soldiers are now suffering from an unknown "Gulf War Illness" that allegedly the government knows nothing about. The United States is also seeking American support in an air strike in Iraq, but it is evident that the government is lacking this support. The United States Government needs to realize that they are killing Iraqis but the moral, economy and patriotism of the whole country. The United States is suffering from homelessness, poverty and hunger. In many cities in the world including in Iraq people can be found in famine. However, the United States is spending U.S. tax dollars in vain. Many congressmen are also unhappy in with the way the U.S. tax dollars are being spent. Senator John Warner, Republican Virginia, a senior member of the Senate Armed Services is very unhappy of the unnecessary spending of the U.S. dollar. Warner stated: "Based on briefings tax payers have spent $750 million on the Gulf War effort," (USA TODAY 2/27/98). This outrage spending could be used to solve the United States economical burdens, and it would be horrible if the world's only remaining superpower uses its awesome might to slather a stricken little country where hunger is a daily menace. The "U.S Patriotic Spirit" is at question with the United States People. At the end of the 1991 Gulf War the country went into a great recession. Many Americans lost their jobs and homes. Americans according to a recent CNN Poll are not supporting an air strike. The poll stated: "41 percent of people favoring an armed strike, with 50 percent opposed and the rest unsure," (Charleston Gazette). After the 1991 Gulf War many war veterans have had many medical problems. One is known as "Gulf War Illness". The Untied States Government hid circumstantial information from the U.S. people. A majority of the troops may have been exposed to hazardous particles of uranium from shells and wrecked Iraq vehicles. The vast majority of soldiers who had physical contact with Iraqi vehicles were on post war missions to clear the battlefield or to destroy what remained of their equipment. One soldier Victor Suell, a radio operator with the Marines had one kidney removed from the effects of the uranium. Suell stated: "Nobody ever told us to stay away from the vehicles that might have been contaminated with depleted uranium," (USA TODAY 3/02/98). The U.S. Government failed to inform the soldiers of the dangers of the shelling. What else is the government failing to bring forward? Is Clinton threatening to have an air strike to cover up his alleged affair with a former White House Intern? The U.S. has been through many wars with the majority of the public support. The United States is just coming out of a recession. The United States Government needs to take care of the Gulf War Veterans and the homeless on the harsh streets in this country. In the changing context of a Post modern era, as the concepts of basic have been interpreted from different points of view, the two basic welfare approaches have to define the grounds basic human needs. Necessarily these approaches result into the concepts of â€Å"quality of life†, â€Å"human rights†, â€Å"social welfare†. But at the same time the universal optimal approaches are to prepa re congenial criteria for the concept of human services. These approaches are outlined in such a way that they are ordained to include all of the services that are offered in a modern state. One of the weak points of these approaches is that they often ignore the concept of Human services as social services that are designed to meet human needs. The concept of care is often confronted with the policies that are directly or indirectly related to the cultural factors and issues regarding age, sex and gender. Also these issues are related to the structure of the various institutions of human society. These factors issues of culture and society are interrelated with each other in such a way that any adverse effect on one of them affects others in a difficult way.
